Publishing Industry:
**Molly McAdams's TRUSTING LIAM, where a young woman's attempt to stay far away from relationships and men determined to be in charge, discovers after an unexpected encounter one evening, her new neighbor may be the one guy she can't resist and that together they may be the best thing that's ever happened to each other, William Morrow, Fall 2014.
**A. Meredith Walters's previously self published titles FIND YOU IN THE DARK and LIGHT IN THE SHADOWS, an emotional series about the all-consuming power of first love, Gallery.
**Jo Whittemore's CONFIDENTIALLY YOURS, about a group of sixth-graders who collaborate on an advice column and resolve all the problems of their school one anonymous letter at a time, Harper Children's.
**Sabaa Tahir's debut AN EMBER IN THE ASHES, the story of two teenagers fighting to survive under the Empire's brutal, militaristic regime, which has outlawed reading among the once-powerful "Scholar" class; the "Scholars" live under the oppression of the "Martials," who silently assassinate insurgents; pitched as inspired by the author's experiences as an editor on the foreign desk at The Washington Post and as a child growing up in the Mojave Desert, Razorbill, winter 2015; Film rights to Paramount Pictures, with Academy Award-winning producer Mark Johnson (Breaking Bad, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Notebook) attached.
**James Frey and Nils Johnson-Shelton's ENDGAME: THE CALLING, the first in a trilogy reported to be about a world in which 12 bloodlines each produce a teen warrior champion and there is a fight to eliminate all the bloodlines except for the winners which will feature an interactive puzzle comprised of clues and riddles throughout the text and a major prize for each book in the series; the deal also includes fifteen original e-book novellas, YouTube videos, search and image results, mapping coordinates, social media, and interactive gaming, Harper Children's. Film rights to Fox and producers Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen at Temple Hill.
**Knockout Games by G.Neri (Children's: Young Adult | Coretta Scott King Honor author G. Neri's new YA novel, Knockout Games, tells the story of Erica, a white 15-year-old, and her experience getting caught up in the TKO Club, a group more ...)
**EKHO: Evil Kid Hunting Organization (The EKHO Series-book 1) by Marie D. Jones, Max Jones (Children's: Middle grade | Ten-year-old Elvis Jones is tired of being picked on, taunted, and teased by the bullies at his elementary school, so he does what any smart, technologically brilliant kid his age would do: more ... )
**Chicken Squad: The First Misadventure -- Doreen Cronin, illustrated by Kevin Cornell (chapter-book mystery series starring the same characters as Cronin's J.J. Tully Mysteries for middle grade readers, but geared toward a younger audience. In the first book, four chicks – Dirt, Sugar, Sweetie, and Poppy – are anything but chicken. They are the bravest detectives in town and they'll stop at nothing to solve mysteries and fight crime in the barnyard and beyond. Atheneum, April 2014).
Check back next week for:
** Black River -- Jeff Hirsch (In the YA novel, 16-year-old Cardinal Odera is the only member of his family to escape a virus that stole the memories of everyone in his town. He chooses to remain in his quarantined town, caring for a band of orphaned kids, but when a mysterious young woman appears, and factions within the town begin to agitate for greater freedom, the safe, closed-off world he worked so hard to build begins to crumble. Clarion Books, fall 2015).
**John David Anderson's THE DUNGEONEERS, about the perfect pickpocket, but when he's chosen to enter a school that trains dungeon raiders, he soon learns that taking treasure from monsters is the easiest part of being a Dungeoneer, Walden Pond Press, Summer 2015.
** What The Dinosaurs Did Last Night -- Susan and Refe Tuma (based on a series of toy dinosaur scenes created by two parents who dedicated an entire month to convincing their children that their toy dinosaurs come to life and wreak havoc while they are all asleep. Little, Brown and Company (fall 2014) & Little, Brown Books for Young Readers (fall 2015)).

John Green on why he'll never self-publish. meanwhile Sylvia Day signs a $10 Million+ Deal with a new publisher (St. Martin's Press) for her next series, Blacklist. It has nothing to do with young adult, but I felt like sharing nonetheless. Also not up on Goodreads yet.

The View from Her 'Corner': A Children's Publishing Columnist on 20 Years of Industry Change. This was really fascinating. It's so strange to think of how Harry Potter might've brought about the focus on crossover novels, and how, from there the trend went to comics and other things, and how, still 20 years later, people don't consider children's novels of "real" literary value.

The Sweet Valley High novels, among others, were the training bras of literature.
Young adult books and sex: What we learned under the covers. Some of those aren't actually young adult novels... but the Sweet Valley High series is mentioned again, and I kind of feel like I need to read those some day soon just to understand the hype.
Is It Science Fiction? The problem I have with some of the articles that are cited as justification for sci-fi is that those are the articles that make it into the news. Inevitably that means they've been sensationalized, so using them to create even more fictitious works... argh. #grumpyscientist.

Please Don't Bring Me Flowers. I don't remember reading this novel, but I'm intrigued by the variety of responses it's been getting. Have any of you watched the Lifetime series?

Movie/TV Shows:
And for all you, Veronica Mars fans, there's going to be a digital spin-off / web series of the show. It may or may not come before the film's March 14 release.
You have about one day left to vote in the third round for the 2014 MTV Movie Brawl. Some well-known YA adaptations are up there!

Vampire Academy is getting released a week early. The release date is now Feb. 7th! Here are two new clips: Trust and Last Stand. (I wonder if those were the sneak peaks/the exclusive new trailer?) And here are some new stills of Sarah Hyland (Natalie), & other stills... And the soundtrack will be available for purchase on Feb. 11th.
Unfortunately for UK VA fans, the release date has been pushed back to April 23rd.
So, I haven't read Love, Rosie, but it's apparently being made into a movie with Lily Collins and here are a few stills. According to Goodreads, it's not actually YA, but it looks like it could fit with New Adult...?
Apparently they screened The Fault in Our Stars and John Green and Ansel Elgort posted their reactions to seeing the film.
The Pronunciation of 'Smaug.' I haven't read Lord of the Rings or finished reading The Hobbit, but this amuses me. I love that we book lovers can get so hung up on these details :).

Kristen Stewart's Starring in a Romantic Remake of 1984, and here's why it might not suck as much as you think it will. (...main update being, according to its director, that “it’s about love in a world where love really doesn’t exist anymore.”...) -- Does this not sound a tad bit like Delirium except now Equals is going to the big screen while Fox canceled its showing of Delirium?

Most Featured: Into the Still Blue by Veronica Rossi and Avalon by Mindee Arnett. I think I've seen these around more often because of their blog tours. I'm also thinking of getting rid of this section or revamping "most featured" to "books releasing this month." Something like that. What do you think?
Recent Recommended Reads: You can read my review of Cress (Lunar Chronicles #3) by Marissa Meyer (another thrilling blend of science fantasy, romance, and fairy tale adventure.). Also recently read Howl's Moving Castle, Castle in the Air, and House of Many Ways, and I must say I understand the Diana Wynne Jones hype. HMC's my favorite of the trilogy, and one of the books I'd pick to define me as a reader, and I'm now over two years late in mourning this particularly talented author's death. They're a little more middle grade oriented than what I usually read, but they're so much fun and the characters quirky and fantastic and wonderfully flawed. Reminds me of a younger version of The Raven Boys cast.
Which articles did you like best? Did I miss any news? Did you host a cover reveal or discussion that I should have posted about? A giveaway? Leave the links, and I'll either edit this post or post about 'em next week.
