Awards: In case you didn’t check them out last week or tune into TeaTime, here are the Book Shimmy award winners. The Guardian names its best children’s books of 2014. The 15th Annual Blue Murphy book award shortlist was also announced. You can stay up to date with all the awards that are being announced with Publishers Weekly’s Best Books Round-up. There’s also a new UK award, the YA book prize, and its shortlist has also been announced. New York Public Library has named its best books of 2014. The nominees for the best YA nonfiction from YALSA was announced (you can check out the previous best of 2014 too). iTunes listed its Best of 2014 books (All the Light We Cannot See for fiction…). Meg Wolitzer’s Belzhar was named the best YA book of 2014 by EW. NPR also has listed its best books of 2014.
You can nominate your favorite reads for the Teen Choice Book Awards up until February 2nd.

So, last week I mentioned how Zoella broke records with the largest sales for a debut novel in its first week… This week, it’s been announced that her novel, Girl Online, was ghost-written.
Characters in children’s books are almost always white, and it’s a big problem. The #WeNeedDiverseBooks initiative/non-profit work is extremely, extremely important. I never feel like I can say the right words or express myself well when it comes matters of social injustice, but when I think about books and things that are currently happening in this country, recognizing the need for change on all fronts is key. “Peter Pan” and a lot of children’s classics are in fact racist, though should you sanitize the books? Also, the #WeNeedDiverseBooks campaign met its goal on IndieGogo, but you can still support it here.
A look at 2014 in children’s publishing: lots of miscellaneous articles and titles here; different from the usual wrap-up post.
An interesting infographic on what kids aged 6 - 17 want to read more of in their books. Super cool especially to see how their tastes change over time. You can also read more from other kids and their reasons for why they like books here. Also, an interesting look at how devices are changing children’s reading preferences.
Even more interesting data will be released this coming week on YA books (e.g. some interesting facts: “Every YA novel on a Bookscan-sourced list of the 20 top children’s bestsellers from the fourth quarter of 2011 through the third quarter of 2014 (topped by Veronica Roth’s Divergent and John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars) was backed by a media tie-in.” YA is emerging as a favorite “movie genre.” & & MANY MORE COOL THINGS).
For Christmas, JKR is giving us new Harry Potter stories (including a story on Draco?). Huzzah! (And apparently she now follows John Green.).

Turns out the Barnes and Noble deal with Microsoft - well, now it's over. B&N has now repurchased the shares in its company and will be trying again to revitalize Nook sales though they continue to fall.

Recent Recommended Reads: Recently finished The Last Time We Say Goodbye by Cynthia Hand. I don't think that I'll be able to objectively (or really, since all reviews are subjective, try for objectivity as much as possible) review this since I was reminded of my best friend's suicide not four months ago. I don't really know if I was reacting to the memory of that or this book. Or maybe that's all a sign of the author's ability to depict grief; I'd downloaded this ARC months and months ago because I was impressed by the way Cynthia Hand dealt with grief in Hallowed. I need to sit this out for a while -- but I would recommend that others try it for themselves. Also recently read The Maze Runner by James Dashner for my book club.

- Wolf Hollow - Lauren Wolk (The middle-grade novel is set in 1943 and follows an 11-year-old who lives in a Pennsylvania farming community; the second book in the deal is currently untitled. Wolk, an award-winning poet, is author of the adult novel Those Who Favor Fire. The publisher compared Wolf Hollow to To Kill a Mockingbird, saying it "explores a resilient young woman's coming of age as she risks herself for what's right at a tortured crossroads in American history." Wolf Hollow is slated for publication in 2016; Dutton).
- Mutant Bunny Island - Obert Skye (In which geeky 10-year-old Perry Owens travels to off-the-grid Bunny Island in search of his missing uncle only to make a hare-raising discovery. Publication of the first book is set for fall 2016; HarperCollins).
- Escaping Perfect - Emma Harrison (In the story, a girl fakes her own death to escape from her high-pressure political family and moves to Tennessee where she starts a new life. Publication is scheduled for spring 2016; Simon Pulse).
- This Is the Part Where You Laugh - Peter Brown Hoffmeister (The book follows a boy "navigating friendship, love, and basketball under the specter of crime, low expectations, and a family history of drug abuse." Hoffmeister, once a homeless teen, is now a high school teacher. It's slated for fall 2016; Knopf).
- Moving Target - Christina Diaz Gonzalez (MG pitched as "Percy Jackson meets The Da Vinci Code." In the story, a 12-year-old girl studying in Rome discovers she is a member of an ancient bloodline enabling her to use a legendary object that can alter the future. Publication is planned for 2015; Scholastic).
- Missing Arabella - Kathryn Siebel (a comic debut novel about twin sisters in the tradition of Lemony Snicket and Roald Dahl's Matilda, about how a little bit of mischief is sometimes the only viable option. Publication is set for summer 2016; Knopf).
- Currently Untitled following Falls the Shadow - Stefanie Gaither (In her new story, a violent clone and a human boy reveal a conspiracy within the world's only cloning corporation and decide whether to fight for humans or machines – even if choosing sides means saying good-bye to their loved ones. It’s scheduled for spring/summer 2016; Simon & Schuster).
- Auraseer trilogy - Kathryn Purdie (YA debut about a 17-year-old girl who is obliged to use her gift for feeling – and absorbing – the emotions of others to protect her nation's emperor from harm. Publication of book one, Auraseer, is scheduled for winter 2016; HarperCollins).
- We Are the Ants - Shaun David Hutchinson (about a teen possibly abducted by aliens and told the world will end in 144 days unless he pushes a button. But in the aftermath of his boyfriend's suicide, he's not sure the world is worth saving. Publication is set for spring 2016; Simon Pulse).
- Bone Jack - Sara Crowe (Carnegie Medal-nominated middle-grade novel in which a teen caught between his recently returned veteran father's PTSD and his best friend's descent into grief is training to be the stag boy in the annual Stag Chase. Publication is slated for spring 2017; Philomel).
- City Moon - Rachael Cole, illustrated by Hadley Hooper (about a child learning about the moon with his mother. It is scheduled for release in fall 2016. Random House's Schwartz & Wade Books).

Recent Recommended Reads: Recently finished The Last Time We Say Goodbye by Cynthia Hand. I don't think that I'll be able to objectively (or really, since all reviews are subjective, try for objectivity as much as possible) review this since I was reminded of my best friend's suicide not four months ago. I don't really know if I was reacting to the memory of that or this book. Or maybe that's all a sign of the author's ability to depict grief; I'd downloaded this ARC months and months ago because I was impressed by the way Cynthia Hand dealt with grief in Hallowed. I need to sit this out for a while -- but I would recommend that others try it for themselves. Also recently read The Maze Runner by James Dashner for my book club.
