Excerpts: Just How It Happened - Austin Mahone
Book Trailers: Little White Lies - Katie Dale, The Prey - Tom Isbell
So, last week I mentioned how Zoella broke records with the largest sales for a debut novel in its first week… This week, it’s been announced that her novel, Girl Online, was ghost-written.
Characters in children’s books are almost always white, and it’s a big problem. The #WeNeedDiverseBooks initiative/non-profit work is extremely, extremely important. I never feel like I can say the right words or express myself well when it comes matters of social injustice, but when I think about books and things that are currently happening in this country, recognizing the need for change on all fronts is key. “Peter Pan” and a lot of children’s classics are in fact racist, though should you sanitize the books? Also, the #WeNeedDiverseBooks campaign met its goal on IndieGogo, but you can still support it here.
A look at 2014 in children’s publishing: lots of miscellaneous articles and titles here; different from the usual wrap-up post.
An interesting infographic on what kids aged 6 - 17 want to read more of in their books. Super cool especially to see how their tastes change over time. You can also read more from other kids and their reasons for why they like books here. Also, an interesting look at how devices are changing children’s reading preferences.
Even more interesting data will be released this coming week on YA books (e.g. some interesting facts: “Every YA novel on a Bookscan-sourced list of the 20 top children’s bestsellers from the fourth quarter of 2011 through the third quarter of 2014 (topped by Veronica Roth’s Divergent and John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars) was backed by a media tie-in.” YA is emerging as a favorite “movie genre.” & & MANY MORE COOL THINGS).
For Christmas, JKR is giving us new Harry Potter stories (including a story on Draco?). Huzzah! (And apparently she now follows John Green.).
Brief recap of author and industry events from last week. Ever wondered what it’s like for a debut author on tour? Here’s an article describing that experience.
Hachette is partnering with Gumroad, “the powerful platform that enables creators to sell products to their audience, on a new social media commerce initiative to enable book purchases natively within Twitter.”
Social Media Giving Books campaigns are on the rise, and it appears, quite successful. Chronicle Books donates 10,000 books in record time.
Will you be seeing Marissa Meyer on her Fairest tour?
Turns out the Barnes and Noble deal with Microsoft - well, now it's over. B&N has now repurchased the shares in its company and will be trying again to revitalize Nook sales though they continue to fall.
The publishing people to know in 2014. So impressed with Ellen Oh and We Need Diverse Books ("As of press time, WNDB’s six-week Indiegogo fund-raising campaign to finance these initiatives has raised almost $322,000 from more than 2,200 funders,..")

So maybe the best “best of” posts are the ones looking at the beautiful covers of 2014. Because wow. I haven’t heard of a lot of these but if I saw them while browsing a store…
Book Riot has a round-up of its staff’s favorite books of 2014. One of their YA specialists, Kelly from Stacked Books, also rounds up some titles from 2014 that should be on your TBR. And here’s another best of list, 10 best nonfiction titles, or some Canadian books you ought to read. The best fiction novels of 2014 from the Buzzfeed staff is here as well.
So, as the year comes to a close, a lot of people are reflecting on how their reading habits have changed in 2014. Some people will resolve to read less next year. Others even more. What are you going to do with your New Years Resolutions?
Gifts! All the holiday gift ideas! Look at how cute these bookmarks are! More accessories for all!
How awesome is this space? I’d like to have a place dedicated to reading “only for pleasure.” Or napping. Ah, all that natural light too… How awesome are all these book nooks. AH.
Did you think that there was unrealistic optimism in the Narnia world? Did you find it comforting?
Do you put stock in the Bechdel test? Well, here is a list of books that pass the test.

Recent Recommended Reads: Recently finished The Last Time We Say Goodbye by Cynthia Hand. I don't think that I'll be able to objectively (or really, since all reviews are subjective, try for objectivity as much as possible) review this since I was reminded of my best friend's suicide not four months ago. I don't really know if I was reacting to the memory of that or this book. Or maybe that's all a sign of the author's ability to depict grief; I'd downloaded this ARC months and months ago because I was impressed by the way Cynthia Hand dealt with grief in Hallowed. I need to sit this out for a while -- but I would recommend that others try it for themselves. Also recently read The Maze Runner by James Dashner for my book club.
